Developing a Growth Mindset for Music Students with Differentiated Portfolios
Differentiated Portfolios to provide evidence of mastery for all students
Differentiated Portfolios: Fostering growth mindset through evidence based mastery
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Every music student deserves an instructional experience that meets them exactly where they are, yet multi-level ensembles make it notoriously difficult to appropriately challenge every player without burying directors in endless paperwork. Subjective letter grades are no longer enough to document true individual growth or provide transparent access for families. Digital, standards-based portfolio maps solve this structural problem by streamlining differentiation into a single, manageable system. This practical session demonstrates how to implement digital portfolios to collect video evidence of mastery, seamlessly track individual progress, and communicate clearly with parents. We will analyze real student portfolios and explore fully customizable blueprint maps for band, percussion, and music theory that allow six different proficiency levels to work on the same assignment simultaneously. You will leave with actionable strategies to modernize your grading practices, encourage consistent at-home practice, and leverage free digital platforms to simplify student data management.
