Making Equity Actionable
Moving equity from a value statement to a daily practice — with concrete strategies that inspire excellence in every student.
Making Equity Actionable: practical strategies to inspire growth for all students.
Session Description:
Teaching with an equity mindset is vital, but what does that actually look and sound like in a daily music rehearsal or classroom? This session moves past abstract theory to explore the concrete mechanics of equitable music education by asking four essential questions: Who is represented in our curriculum, where do access and opportunities truly exist, what structures cause barriers, and how do we ensure every student thrives? Drawing from the intersections of Trust Psychology and Growth Pedagogy, we will examine how to audit song selection for cultural appreciation versus appropriation, build systems that position students as co-experts, and implement equitable grading frameworks like standards-based practices to eliminate the case against zero. You will leave this workshop with a toolbox of immediate, innovative projects—from hip-hop pedagogical frameworks to structured karaoke units—designed to decenter traditional barriers, celebrate student voice, and make equity actionable in your music program.
Session Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will:
Conduct a Curricular Equity Audit: Evaluate repertoire and song selection through a structured framework, distinguishing between cultural appropriation and true appreciation while actively centering counter-narratives.
Implement Asset-Based Pedagogy: Design student-centered music spaces that explicitly position young musicians as co-experts, elevating individual student voice and storytelling within the rehearsal structure.
Apply Equitable Grading Frameworks: Realign classroom evaluation by transitioning to standards-based grading practices and dismantling outdated structural barriers, such as the institutional reliance on zero-point grading.
Deploy Innovative Instructional Projects: Integrate culturally responsive curriculum models, including hip-hop pedagogical frameworks and student-driven projects, to broaden student access and cultural relevance.
Expand Competitive and Collegiate Pathways: Adapt preparation structures for solo and ensemble festivals, collegiate auditions, and program acceptance to ensure historically marginalized student groups have transparent, supported pipelines to success.
